Pattern Darning

Pattern Darning was created using the very simple darning stitch. Who but Victorian women would figure a way to make such a practical stitch a thing of beauty?

Instructions

When the Pattern Darning Stitch is employed, all the work is done upon the background, and the design is left clear. The pattern must be traced lightly upon the foundation, and then the surrounding space is filled with close rows of Darning Stitch. See illustration.

Illustration of Pattern Darning Stitch

The pattern itself is not even outlined, but is brought into relief by the surrounding stitches, which must end exactly upon the light outline of the design.
