Here is a great Victorian Shoe Bag Pattern dated c. 1887. Instead of using standard embroidery silks, fine braid is used for the design. The following directions are exactly as published.

Shoe Bag

Made of brown Holland, fine scarlet washing braid, and scarlet worsted braid.

To work: Cut the back and pocket out of brown Holland, BRAID them with the fine braid, sew together, and hide the edges with box-pleated worsted braid.

As can be seen, many craft and home decor ideas published during this era gave scant details on how to accomplish the task. However, often times, the project is so simple, like this one, that even if the crafter chose to deviate from the instructions given, the items would still turn out nicely.
