The Oblong CenterpieceThe oblong centerpiece looks beautiful on a longer table. The length can be easily adapted to whatever size you need.Below is an authentic oblong doily diagram and instructions that were published in 1896.  Click on picture to see more detail. Stamp this Chrysanthemum design, also scalloped edge, on a fine quality of linen. The size is 17 x 25 inches. The edge is buttonholed with white floss, or colored, if preferred. The sprays of yellow flowers are worked in solid Kensington. These colors include the entire range of yellow - from pale canary yellow to deep orange. Of course only a part of these shades need be used, if desired. The leaves are embroidered with four very close shades of green. MATERIALS - Linen, 17 x 25 inches; approximately: 1 dozen skeins of yellow floss; 6 skeins of green; 1 dozen skeins of Twisted Embroidery Silk for edge. These were especially adapted to tray or centerpieces but the difference between a centerpiece and doily is so unclear that the purpose of the embroidered piece is simply a matter of choice.
